Some tools and props can enhance digital play.
Technology tools
These technology tools can create very different play experiences.
- Headphones – encourage solo play, but you may choose not to provide headphones, or not at all times, to stimulate co-play.
- Smartboards/TV – can be mirrored to introduce the games to the class and to engage in group play.
- Covers – prevent damage and enable children to take devices into outdoor areas.
Time management tools
Time management tools can promote turn-taking, sharing and self-regulation skills.
You could incorporate:
- visual timers (for example, a kitchen timer or sand timer)
- device-based timers (see Using tablet devices with children)
- the Guided Access functionality on iPads (see Using tablet devices with children)
- schedule boards
- name lists and turn-taking sheets.
ELLA printable resources
Printing out a variety of ELLA’s free resources can enhance, replicate and extend children’s play experiences. These include:
- manipulative materials,
- games
- posters
- ‘I can’ statement resources.
Cultural display items
Expand on the language-learning by carrying the cultural theme throughout your preschool/school. For instance, you could display:
- maps and globes
- artefacts
- books
- photos/posters/signs
- clothing/dress-ups
- souvenirs.
